Francisco Javier Arana Castro was a major in the Guatemalan army. He was born on December 3, 1905, in Villa Canales, Guatemala. His parents were Ángel María Arana and Margarita Castro. Arana had both Spanish and Indigenous heritage. He did not go to a formal school. However, he was a well-read and intelligent man. People described him as a very persuasive person in private talks.

In 1944, a revolution began in Guatemala. First, people protested against the dictator Jorge Ubico. After Ubico left, a leader named Federico Ponce Vaides took over. Arana joined a plan to remove Ponce Vaides from power. He worked with Jacobo Árbenz and other army officers. On October 19, 1944, they launched a coup. They were joined by students and union workers. By October 20, the government surrendered.

After the revolution, Arana became a very powerful leader. He was part of a three-person group called a junta. This group ruled Guatemala for a short time. Arana wanted to keep control of the military. He was reluctant to let the elected President, Juan José Arévalo, take office. Arévalo eventually became president in 1945. To keep peace, a new position was made for Arana. He became the Chief of the Armed Forces.

As time passed, Arana and the government disagreed. Arana did not like new labor reforms that helped workers. Many wealthy landowners began to support Arana instead. In 1945, a secret deal called the Pact of the Ravine was made. Arana promised not to take power by force. In return, a political party promised to help him run for president. This agreement was kept secret from the public for a long time.

In July 1949, the tension between Arana and the government reached a breaking point. Arana gave an ultimatum to President Arévalo. He demanded that certain leaders be removed from the government. Arévalo and the Congress decided to dismiss Arana from his job. On July 18, 1949, a shootout happened between Arana's group and supporters of the president. Arana was killed during this event. This struggle left about 150 people dead and 200 wounded.
