He was the first person to serve as the president of the country. Before he became a leader, he studied law at the Royal and Pontifical University of San Carlos Borromeo. His life took place during a time of great change and many arguments. Two main groups fought for control over how the land should be run. These groups were called the Liberals and the Conservatives.

This struggle shaped the history of the whole region.

Conflict often happened between these two groups. A Liberal leader named Francisco Morazán led many of the Liberal forces.

He fought against the Conservative group to gain power. During these fights, a military leader named Rafael Carrera became a very strong figure. Carrera was a leader of the people and worked closely with the Conservatives. The two sides had many battles that changed who was in charge. These battles were often very difficult and caused much trouble for the people living there.

A new group tried to break away from Guatemala during this time. They formed an independent state called Los Altos in April 1838.

The people in this area were known as Altenses. They wanted to be their own country instead of part of Guatemala. The Conservative government under Rivera Paz did not want this to happen. They decided to use their army to bring the area back under control. General Rafael Carrera led the army to stop the new state of Los Altos.

In 1840, another big fight took place when Morazán tried to invade Guatemala again.

He brought 1,500 soldiers to try to take the capital. Carrera used clever plans to defend the city and surprise the invading army. He fought in the streets and near the Central Park. Carrera won this large battle and defeated Morazán's troops. This victory was a major moment for the Conservative leaders in Guatemala. It helped keep the country under their control for a while longer.

As time went on, the pressure on Rivera Paz grew much stronger. In June 1844, there were fights with El Salvador near the borders. Rivera Paz had to close the borders to keep the country safe. He used people from the border to watch for any invaders. By December 1844, the pressure from Rafael Carrera became too much to handle. Rivera Paz decided to step down from his job as leader. He gave his official resignation to the Assembly and left his role.
