Dionisio de Herrera was an important leader in Central America. He was born on October 9, 1781, in Choluteca, Honduras. He grew up in a family that owned land. Later, he went to the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. There, he studied law and learned new ideas. These ideas came from the French Revolution. They focused on liberal views about how a country should work.

Herrera's career in government started in 1820. He worked as a secretary for the town of Tegucigalpa. After Central America became free from Spain and Mexico, he gained more power. On September 16, 1824, he became the first head of state for Honduras. He worked with a vice-head named Colonel José Justo Milla. Herrera wanted to organize the new country well. He created the first territorial subdivisions for the land.

He made many big changes during his time in Honduras. He split the country into six departments. These were Comayagua, Tegucigalpa, Santa Bárbara, Yoro, Olancho, and Choluteca. He also helped create the first constitution on December 11, 1825. A constitution is a set of important rules for a state. However, his time in power faced many hard moments. He survived an attempt on his life in November 1826.

In May 1827, a coup d'état took his power. This is a sudden change in government led by force. Colonel Milla led this change with help from Conservative groups. Herrera was sent to Guatemala as a prisoner for two years. He returned in 1829 and was elected leader of Nicaragua in 1830. He led Nicaragua until November 1833. His nephew, General Francisco Morazán, helped him during this time.

Herrera tried to pass new liberal reforms in Nicaragua. Many church leaders opposed these changes, so they did not succeed. In 1835, people chose him to lead El Salvador. He said no to that job. He retired from politics in 1838 to become a teacher. He lived in the city of San Vicente, El Salvador. He stayed there until he died on June 13, 1850.
