Grahn began her rigorous training at a very young age. She studied at the Royal Danish Theatre School in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her primary instructor was the famous teacher August Bournonville. She made her official debut at the theater in 1834. By 1835, she performed the leading role of Astrid in Bournonville's ballet, Valdemar. During this time, Grahn became known for her impressive footwork. She reportedly modified some of the choreography in Valdemar to highlight her technical abilities. This action led to a formal complaint from Bournonville to the theater directors.

Her career was marked by a desire for greater international stages. Grahn specifically yearned to dance with the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet. In 1836, she created the title role in Bournonville's La Sylphide. That same year, she received royal permission to leave Denmark. However, she never returned to her home country after her departure. In 1839, Grahn had overstayed the terms of her formal leave. As a result, she was dropped from the official rolls of the Royal Danish Ballet.

After leaving Denmark, Grahn expanded her reach as a global performer. From 1839 to 1845, she danced in several major European cities. These locations included London, St. Petersburg, and Milan. Her reputation grew steadily during these years. In 1845, she reached a major milestone in her career. She was invited to participate in Perrot's Pas de Quatre. This was a special performance featuring four celebrated soloists. The group included Marie Taglioni, Fanny Cerrito, and Carlotta Grisi.

The Pas de Quatre performance was a significant moment of recognition. Although Grahn was the least well-known of the four dancers, she was accepted as a peer. She showed great professional courtesy by agreeing to dance first in the group. Following this success, Grahn's work moved beyond just performing. After 1846, she toured much of Europe as a creator. She produced several ballets, including a revival of Perrot's Catarina. She even produced her own play titled Bacchus et Ariadne.

Grahn eventually settled in Germany, a country she grew to love. She moved to Hamburg in 1848. Later, she built a permanent home in the city of Munich. She officially retired from active dancing in 1856. Around this time, she married Friedrich Young. Grahn did not leave the world of dance entirely after her retirement. She transitioned into the role of a ballet mistress, which is a professional who directs and teaches dancers. She held this position in Leipzig, Germany, from 1858 to 1861. She later served at the Court Opera in Munich from 1869 to 1875.

Lucile Grahn's legacy is tied to her lifelong dedication to the art of ballet. She lived from June 30, 1819, until April 4, 1907. She passed away in Munich, the city where she had built her life. Grahn was a woman of great generosity. Upon her death, she left her entire estate to the city of Munich. Her life connects the traditions of the Royal Danish Ballet to the wider European stage. She remains a vital figure in the history of Romantic era dance.
