arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Louis Sebastian Theroux is a prominent British journalist, broadcaster, and author. He is widely recognized for his documentary filmmaking, which often explores unusual subcultures, the justice system, and the lives of celebrities. His work is known for a style that is both observant and empathetic. The New Yorker described his approach as a "piercingly humane, slyly funny guide" through the complex parts of American culture. Over his long career, he has earned significant professional recognition. He has received three British Academy Television Awards and a Royal Television Society Television Award.

Theroux employs a specific documentary method to engage with his subjects. In his series *Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends*, he often lived among or near the groups he studied. This approach allowed him to observe marginal subcultures, such as survivalists or white supremacists, in their own environments. By immersing himself, he could subtly highlight contradictions or farcical elements within their seriously held beliefs. In the series *When Louis Met...*, he shifted his focus to British celebrities. He accompanied them through their daily lives, conducting interviews while they performed their normal routines. This method often captured unscripted moments, such as when the crew recorded a live microphone that caught Max Clifford lying.

His body of work can be divided into several distinct types of programming. The *Weird Weekends* series (1998–2000) focused on fringe American subcultures. The *When Louis Met...* series (2000–2002) moved toward celebrity profiles. Since 2003, he has produced numerous BBC Two specials that explore larger themes. These specials often feature feature-length documentaries on subjects like criminal gangs in Lagos or the prison systems in California and Florida. More recently, his work has expanded into different formats. He has produced feature-length films like *My Scientology Movie* (2016) and series for streaming platforms like Netflix, such as *Inside the Manosphere* (2026).

Theroux's journey began with a diverse international background. He was born in Singapore on May 20, 1970. His father, Paul Theroux, is a noted American novelist and travel writer. His mother, Anne, is English. After moving to England as a child, he attended Westminster School. He later studied Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he graduated with first-class honours in 1991. His early professional life took him to the United States. He worked as a journalist for *Metro Silicon Valley* and the satirical magazine *Spy*. He also gained early television experience as a correspondent for Michael Moore's *TV Nation*.

Throughout his career, Theroux has maintained a significant presence in global media. His documentary work has spanned many locations, including South Africa, Israel, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom. His influence extends to various digital and audio platforms as well. He hosts *The Louis Theroux Podcast* on Spotify and previously produced the *Grounded with Louis Theroux* podcast for BBC Radio 4. His production company, Mindhouse, also produces content for major streamers, such as the Netflix documentary *Can I Tell You a Secret?*. Even his musical endeavors have seen massive scale. His rap single "Jiggle Jiggle" became a gold certified single in the United States, selling over 500,000 copies.

Theroux has also contributed to literature through several published works. In 2005, he released *The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures*, which revisited people from his early television work. In 2019, he published his memoir, *Gotta Get Theroux This*. He followed this in 2021 with *Theroux the Keyhole*, a diary documenting his experiences during the United Kingdom's COVID-19 lockdowns. These books allow him to explore his subjects and his own life with a depth that television sometimes limits. His writing provides a personal perspective on his travels and observations.

Today, Theroux's work connects deeply with modern social and political discussions. His series *Forbidden America* (2022) examines the impact of social media on groups like the alt-right. His 2025 documentary *The Settlers* explores the lives of Israeli religious-nationalist settlers and Palestinian activists. By tackling these sensitive and evolving topics, he remains a central figure in contemporary documentary storytelling. His ability to move between traditional broadcasting and modern streaming platforms shows how his work adapts to a changing media landscape.
