These include Harvard University and the London School of Economics. He has also been a fellow at the University of Oxford and New York University. In 2021, he helped found the University of Austin. He started this new college because he believes higher education is currently broken. This shows his interest in changing how students learn about the world.

His academic journey began in Scotland and England. He was born in Glasgow on April 18, 1964. His father was a doctor and his mother was a physics teacher. He attended The Glasgow Academy before going to the University of Oxford. At Oxford, he earned a first-class honours degree in history in 1985. He has also written for Newsweek and the Daily Mail. His writing often covers politics and the way economies function. In 2012, he gave the BBC Reith Lectures. These four lectures explored the role of man-made institutions. He discussed topics like the rule of law and the causes of the 2008 financial crisis.

His views on society and politics are often discussed in public. He is described as a conservative and a supporter of leaders like Margaret Thatcher. He has also been a vocal critic of "cancel culture" in universities. He uses this term to describe when people are discouraged from expressing certain ideas. In 2018, he stepped down from a leadership role at Stanford University following a controversy involving student activists. This event showed how complex his role in public debate can be.

Throughout his life, Ferguson has received many important honors. In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2024, King Charles III knighted him for his services to literature. This is a very high honor in the United Kingdom. He has also received honorary degrees from universities in Australia and Chile.
