He is widely recognized for his use of observational comedy. This style involves using humor to highlight cultural, ethnic, and class stereotypes. Peters often draws from his own life as a member of an Anglo-Indian family. He uses various ethnic accents to illustrate these observations. He has stated that his goal is not to offend different groups. Instead, he aims to use humor to raise these cultures up. His work has made him one of the first South Asian Americans to achieve major international success in comedy.

His comedic mechanism relies heavily on cultural connection and digital sharing. A major turning point occurred in 2004 during his performance on the Canadian show Comedy Now!. When this special was uploaded to YouTube, it became a viral sensation. Users began uploading specific segments of the performance. These clips focused on individual cultural groups. Because these segments targeted specific demographics, they were very well received by those groups. This digital momentum allowed his popularity to spread globally. He even references this viral history in his performance titled Outsourced.

Throughout his career, Peters has achieved massive commercial milestones. In 2007, he became the first comedian to sell out Toronto's Air Canada Centre. He sold more than 16,000 tickets in just two days for a single show. Nationally, he sold over 30,000 tickets during that same period. In 2009, he set a UK comedy sales record at London's O2 Arena by selling over 16,000 tickets. His reach extended to Australia in 2010, where his Sydney show drew 13,880 people. This was the largest stand-up comedy audience ever recorded in Australia at that time. He also set attendance records at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in 2012.

Financial success has been a consistent part of his professional journey. According to Forbes, Peters earned an estimated $5 million in one year. Between June 2009 and June 2010, his estimated earnings rose to $15 million. By 2013, Forbes estimated his annual earnings reached $21 million. During that same year, he was ranked as the third highest-paid comedian in the world. He also made history as the first comedian to receive a stand-up special on Netflix. These numbers reflect his significant impact on the global entertainment industry.

Peters's career began in Toronto in 1989. His early life in Canada was shaped by his immigrant parents, Eric and Maureen Peters. They moved from Jalandhar and Kolkata, India, to Canada in 1965. Growing up in Brampton, Peters faced bullying due to his ethnicity. He took up boxing to help him resist this bullying. During the 1990s, he was also a well-connected DJ in the Toronto music scene. He met the influential American comedian George Carlin in 1992. Carlin advised him to perform on stage whenever possible. Peters followed this advice, which he credits for his current success.

This award helps students from his former high school attend college. He also maintains a commitment to physical training. Since 2015, he has practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
