He is a central figure in the global spread of dancehall music. This genre is characterized by its energetic rhythms and distinct vocal styles. Through his work, Paul helped popularize the crossover genre known as dancehall pop. His music combines traditional Jamaican sounds with mainstream pop elements. This approach allowed dancehall to reach massive international audiences.

Paul's musical career began through a chance meeting in a Kingston studio. In 1994, he appeared in a music video for Carrot Jetter. Shortly after, he visited a studio to seek musical advice from Jeremy Harding. During this meeting, Paul recorded vocals over a rhythm track. This session resulted in the song "Baby Girl." Harding became Paul's manager and producer, supporting his early growth. Harding even handled various roles, including DJ, road manager, and security guard. They worked together daily to develop Paul's fledgling career.

Before his music success, Paul was an accomplished athlete. He comes from a family of talented swimmers in Jamaica. His maternal grandfather was on the first Jamaican men's national water polo team. His father also played water polo for the national team in the 1960s. Paul himself played for the national water polo team from age 13 to 21. He eventually left the sport to pursue music full-time. He had previously studied commerce at the University of Technology. In 1992, he even worked as a bank teller.

Paul achieved significant international fame during the early 2000s. He released his debut album, *Stage One*, in 2000. His second album, *Dutty Rock*, arrived in November 2002. The single "Gimme the Light" became a worldwide hit in 2002. This success helped him secure a deal with Atlantic Records. The single "Get Busy" later topped the US Billboard Hot 100. This was a historic moment as the first dancehall song to reach number one.

It sold approximately 4 million copies globally. The single "Temperature" became one of his signature hits. It also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Paul's success continued with subsequent albums like *Imperial Blaze* in 2009. He also released *Tomahawk Technique* in 2012, which earned a Grammy nomination.
