Mayer's path to Hollywood started with very hard work. He was born in a village called Dymer in Ukraine. His family was poor and moved around a lot. When he was only twelve, he left school to help his father. They collected scrap metal using a small cart. Later, Mayer moved to Boston and began fixing up old theaters. He turned a rundown building into the Orpheum, his first movie theater. He eventually owned many theaters and even started a film distribution agency.

Mayer teamed up with a producer named Irving Thalberg to run the studio. They were a very successful team because they had different skills. Mayer was an astute businessman who handled the money and budgets. Thalberg was a creative leader who supervised the actual making of the films. Together, they wanted to make the highest quality movies possible.
