A producer is the person who manages the making of a movie. He was known for making grand, high-quality films that people loved to watch. Selznick worked for several major movie studios during the early years of Hollywood. He eventually started his own company called Selznick International Pictures. This allowed him to work as an independent producer. He wanted to give creative people more freedom to do their best work. He believed that a factory-style system could hurt the quality of a film.

To make his movies successful, Selznick followed a special way of working. At the RKO studio, he used a system called unit production. This gave individual producers more independence than the old central system. He also looked for the best people to work behind the camera. He hired talented directors like George Cukor and Merian C. Cooper. He also found new stars, such as the actress Katharine Hepburn. He even approved a screen test for the famous dancer Fred Astaire. Selznick noted that Astaire had a tremendous charm despite his looks.

Selznick's life in movies began with his family connections. He was the son of Lewis J. Selznick, a silent film producer. He also became the son-in-law of Louis B. Mayer, a powerful movie mogul. David studied at Columbia University in New York City. He started training as an apprentice for his father. In 1926, he moved to Hollywood to find work. He first worked as an assistant story editor at MGM. Later, he worked at Paramount Pictures before becoming a leader at RKO in 1931. He left RKO after only fifteen months due to a disagreement.

Many of Selznick's films became huge hits that broke records. He produced the massive movie Gone with the Wind in 1939. This film remains the highest-grossing movie ever when you adjust for inflation. It won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Selznick also won the Irving Thalberg Award for his work on that film. In 1940, he produced Rebecca, which was the first American film for British director Alfred Hitchcock. He also made the famous movie King Kong in 1933. These films helped shape the history of the motion picture industry.

Selznick's personal life was also tied to the world of movies. He married Irene Mayer, the daughter of Louis B. Mayer. Later, he married the Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Jones.

He spent many years helping her career grow. Selznick passed away in 1965. His son, Daniel, also worked in the movie business at Universal Pictures. Even though he had many successes, Selznick sometimes felt he spent his life trying to outdo his own great work. His influence can still be seen in how movies are made today.
