He was born William Joseph Shields in Dublin, Ireland. His father was Irish and his mother was German. Before he was a star, he worked a steady job in the civil service. He started as a junior clerk at the Dublin Board of Trade in 1911. He also worked for the unemployment office during that time. He found his office job to be quite easy and full of leisure.

Acting began as a hobby for him in amateur groups. He joined the Abbey Theatre in 1915 with his brother, Arthur Shields. He used the name Barry Fitzgerald so his bosses would not find out. He worked as a part-time actor while keeping his office job. In 1924, he earned a salary of £2/10 a week at the Abbey. He played many roles, such as Captain Jack Boyle in Juno and the Paycock. Some of his plays were so controversial they caused riots and protests. In 1926, men even tried to kidnap him to stop a play.

Fitzgerald eventually decided to become a full-time actor at age 41. He left his government job to join a production in London in 1929. He made his film debut in a 1930 version of Juno and the Paycock. He toured the United States with the Abbey Players in 1932 and 1934. These tours included plays like The Playboy of the Western World. In 1936, he moved to Hollywood to star in a film by John Ford. He decided to stay in Hollywood and became a busy character actor. This means he played many different types of supporting roles in many movies.

He appeared in many famous films like Bringing Up Baby and The Sea Wolf. In 1944, he became a major star in the film Going My Way. He played Father Fitzgibbon and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was even nominated for Best Actor for that same role. This was a very rare thing to happen at the awards. During the war, Oscar statues were made of plaster instead of metal. Fitzgerald once accidentally broke his statue while practicing his golf swing. The Academy had to give him a new one.

Fitzgerald's talent made him a legend in both Ireland and America. He was listed as one of Ireland's greatest film actors in 2020. He worked in movies, on Broadway, and on television shows. He even appeared in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He died in a Dublin hospital in January 1961. Today, his work is honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One star is for his movies and the other is for television.
