He helped build the famous 20th Century Fox studio. He started his career writing stories for silent films. Later, he became a powerful studio executive. He had a very long career in the movie business. Three of his films won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He also won the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award twice. No one else has ever won that award more than once.

Zanuck's journey began in Wahoo, Nebraska. His father ran a hotel there. When Zanuck was six, his family moved to Los Angeles. He found his first movie job as an extra at age eight. Later, he joined the U.S. Army at age 15. After the war, he worked many part-time jobs. He eventually found work writing movie plots. In 1922, he sold his first story to William Russell. By 1924, he was writing many scripts for Warner Bros. He became a head of production in 1931.

In 1933, Zanuck left Warner Bros. because of a disagreement about pay. He teamed up with Joseph Schenck to start 20th Century Pictures. This new studio was very successful. Many of its films made money at the box office. In 1935, Zanuck and Schenck joined with Fox studios. This created the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. Zanuck became the Vice President of Production. He stayed very involved in every part of making a movie. He helped with scripts and film editing.

During World War II, Zanuck served as a colonel in the U.S. Army. He did not want an easy job in an office. He asked to be sent to London to work with the British Army film unit. He even joined a secret raid on a beach in France. Later, he went to North Africa to film the war for the Signal Corps. This work was very dangerous because of enemy fire. He eventually resigned from the Army in 1944. After the war, he returned to lead his studio again.

Zanuck was known for making movies about important social issues. He helped make films like Gentleman's Agreement, which was about prejudice. He also helped create the widescreen format for movies. He wanted movies to feel big and real for the audience. He believed widescreen was a way for people to participate in the story. This was a way to compete with television. His work changed how people watched movies in theaters.
