He was a master of dialogue, which means he wrote the smart and witty words that actors speak. People also remember him for using voice-over narration and flashbacks to tell stories. A flashback is when a movie shows something that happened in the past.

Many great stars loved working with him because he was an "actor's director." This means he helped them give very strong and memorable performances on screen. He worked with famous people like Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, and Elizabeth Taylor.

His journey into movies had many different steps. He first started as a dialogue writer for Paramount Pictures at age 20.

Later, he moved to MGM, where he worked as a producer. A producer is someone who helps manage the making of a film. He eventually moved to Twentieth Century-Fox to become a director. His first time directing a movie was called Dragonwyck in 1946. He also started his own production company named Figaro in 1953. This allowed him to write, direct, and produce his own special projects.

Joseph's life began in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He grew up with his brother Herman and his sister Erna.

When he was young, he moved to New York City. He went to Columbia University to study, but he did not want to be a doctor. He found that studying frogs and physics was not for him. Instead, he switched his major to English and wrote for a school newspaper. He even moved to Europe to work as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Eventually, his brother Herman encouraged him to move to Hollywood to find work.

Throughout his long career, Joseph earned many great honors. He won four Academy Awards, which are very special prizes for movie makers.

He won two awards in 1950 and 1951 for his work on A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve. He also worked on the massive film Cleopatra in 1963. Even though that movie had many difficult problems during filming, it was the highest-grossing film of that year. His very last film was called Sleuth, which was released in 1972. That movie earned him one final nomination for Best Director.

Making movies is a way to bring stories to life for everyone to see. Joseph showed that a filmmaker can be a writer, a producer, and a director all at once.
