It begins at an award ceremony for a rising actress. A theater critic named Addison DeWitt tells the story through narration. We learn how Eve moves from being a fan to being Margo's understudy. An understudy is an actor who learns a role to replace the main star. Eve eventually succeeds in taking a lead role in a play. By the end, the film shows how one person's hunger for fame can change everything.

This film has a very interesting history of creation.

It started as a short story called "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr. That story was published in a magazine in May 1946. It was inspired by a real story told by an actress named Elisabeth Bergner. Later, the story was turned into a radio play in 1949. Joseph L. Mankiewicz then took these ideas to make the movie we know today. He wrote the script and also directed the film.

The movie was a massive success when it was released.

It received 14 nominations at the 23rd Academy Awards. This was a record for a film at that time. It is the only movie in history to get four acting nominations for women. The actresses Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter were all nominated. The film won six awards, including Best Picture. In 1990, it was even added to the National Film Registry because it is so important.

Many people today still think of this as a great masterpiece.
