Thelma Ritter was a famous American actress who became a star by playing everyday people. She was known for her small size and her strong New York City accent. Instead of playing queens or princesses, she often played working-class characters. People loved her because she felt real and relatable on the screen. She was so good at her job that she earned six Academy Award nominations. This is the second most nominations ever for an actress in that category.

Acting was a craft that Ritter worked at for many years. She began by performing in high school plays and stock companies. Later, she went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to get formal training. She even played Puck in a play called A Midsummer Night's Dream when she was only eleven. After she finished school, she took a break from acting to raise her two children, Monica and Joe. Her husband, Joseph Moran, was also an actor before he became an advertising executive.

Her professional career in movies grew steadily over several decades. Her first movie role was in the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street. In that film, she played a frustrated mother looking for a toy. She did not get credit for that role, but she kept working hard. Later, director Joseph L. Mankiewicz cast her in All About Eve in 1950. This role earned her her very first Oscar nomination. She became a steady worker in Hollywood throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Throughout her life, Ritter appeared in many famous movies and shows. She played a nurse in the 1954 film Rear Window. She also played a housekeeper named Alma in the 1959 movie Pillow Talk. Ritter worked on stage too and won a Tony Award in 1958. She shared this award with her co-star Gwen Verdon for the musical New Girl in Town. She also appeared on television in shows like Wagon Train and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Even though she did not win an Oscar, her impact on film was huge. In 2019, she was named one of ten women who changed the face of film forever. She lived in Queens, New York, for much of her life. She passed away in New York City in 1969 at the age of 66. Her career shows how much talent can come from playing simple, honest roles. She remains a very important part of movie history.
