Stevens learned about storytelling by watching his parents work on stage. His mother and father were both actors in a traveling theater company. As a young boy, he helped his father by holding scripts and marking lines. He even made his first stage appearance at the age of five. When he was ten, he started using a Brownie camera to take portraits. This early interest in pictures helped him understand how to capture a scene.

His career in movies began with technical work behind the camera. At age 17, he worked as an assistant cameraman for Hal Roach Studios. He worked on Western films and funny short movies like the *Our Gang* series. He experimented with special tools like filters to make the sky look black for night scenes. He also used long lenses to bring backgrounds closer to the viewer. Soon, his skill with the camera led him to become a director.
