Cohn helped turn a small company into a very famous studio. He was known for being a very powerful and tough boss. Some people in Hollywood even called him "King Cohn." He was a man who wanted to stay in control of everything. He even used listening devices to hear what was happening on film sets.

Cohn's path to the top was filled with many different jobs. He was born in New York City to a Jewish family. His father was a tailor from Germany. Before he worked in movies, Cohn worked as a salesman and a streetcar conductor. He also worked as a song plugger for sheet music. He eventually joined the film industry at a company called Universal. Later, in 1919, he started a new company with his brother Jack and Joe Brandt. This company was first called CBC Film Sales Corporation. Eventually, it became the famous Columbia Pictures Corporation.

Running a movie studio takes a lot of hard work and money. In the beginning, Columbia was known as a "Poverty Row" studio. This meant they made movies with very small budgets. They made many short films, cartoons, and sports reels to keep money coming in. Everything changed in 1934 with the movie "It Happened One Night." This comedy won many Academy Awards and made the studio famous. Cohn also had a special way of picking actors for his films. He often hired famous stars like Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. He also helped smaller actors grow into big stars like Rita Hayworth.

Cohn was a very complicated person to work for. He was known for being an "autocratic" leader, which means he held all the power. He could be very charming at a dinner party. However, he was also known to scream at people in his office. Some people even called him "White Fang" because of his tough style. He had many connections, including some to organized crime figures. He even used a loan from a man named Abner Zwillman to buy out his partner. His life was full of both big successes and difficult moments.

Many people still remember Harry Cohn through movies and stories. His loud and bossy personality inspired characters in famous films. For example, characters in "All the King's Men" and "The Godfather" were based on him. Cohn died in 1958 after having heart attacks. His funeral was a huge event in Hollywood. Almost the entire movie community came to say goodbye. He left behind a studio that changed how movies were made. His story is a big part of the history of the silver screen.
