Her mother, Peg, helped her find work as a model for song slides. Later, a studio editor named Beta Breuil gave her a small part in a 1909 film. Norma worked her way up by playing many different roles. She played everything from a clumsy waitress to a modern young woman. Between 1911 and 1912, she appeared in over 100 small parts. This experience helped her become a very skilled actress.

Her life changed greatly when she met producer Joseph M. Schenck.

A poll named her the number-one box office star. She earned a huge salary of $10,000 every single week. She also received as many as 3,000 letters from fans every week. Norma even helped start a famous tradition in Hollywood. In 1926, she helped start the building of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Some say she inspired the tradition of leaving footprints in concrete.

As time passed, the movie industry began to change.

The era of silent films ended when "talkies," or movies with sound, arrived. Norma worked hard with voice coaches for over a year. She wanted to be ready for this new way of making movies. She made her sound debut in the film New York Nights in 1929. However, her films with sound did not do as well as her silent ones. She eventually retired from acting as a very wealthy woman.
