Joan Crawford was one of the most famous movie stars in Hollywood history.

Born Lucille Fay LeSueur in 1904, she grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. As a young girl, she loved watching stage shows at her stepfather's theater. She had a huge dream to become a professional dancer. One day, she tried to escape piano lessons by jumping from a porch. This caused a bad injury that required three different surgeries. She could not go to school or dance for 18 months. Even with these hard times, her goal to perform stayed strong.

Her journey to stardom was a path she built herself. She started as a dancer in traveling shows and on Broadway. In 1925, she signed a contract with the MGM film studio. At first, she only had very small roles in movies. She was not happy with these tiny parts. To change this, she began a campaign to promote herself. She went to many dances at hotels and beach piers. She often won competitions by dancing the Charleston and the Black Bottom.

This hard work helped her become a major star.

In the late 1920s, Crawford became a symbol of a new style. She played many "flapper" characters who were free-spirited and modern.

Audiences especially loved her "rags-to-riches" stories. These were films about hardworking women who found love and success. During the Great Depression, these stories were very popular with many people. She became a top star and one of the highest paid women in America. She even rivaled other famous actresses like Greta Garbo. Her fame grew so much that she became a household name.

When movies changed from silent films to "talkies," Crawford was ready.

This was a scary time for many actors because they had to use their voices. Crawford worked very hard to learn how to speak clearly. She studied singing and practiced her diction to lose her Southwestern accent. Her talent helped her succeed in these new sound films. In 1945, she starred in the movie Mildred Pierce. For this role, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. This was one of the highest honors a performer can receive.

Crawford's life outside of movies was also very busy and complex. She married four times during her life. In 1955, she married Alfred Steele, who was the president of the Pepsi-Cola Company. After he died in 1959, she even served on the company's board of directors. She also adopted five children. Her life was not always easy, and she had difficult relationships with some of her children. She continued to act in films and television through the 1960s. She eventually retired from the screen after the 1970 film Trog.
