She was born Lucille Fay LeSueur in Texas. As a child, she loved to dance. She even watched stage shows at her stepfather's theater.

Joan worked very hard to become a star. She started as a dancer in traveling shows. Later, she signed a contract with MGM, a big film studio. She wanted more important roles. To get them, she went to many dances. She often won contests by dancing the Charleston.

She became a symbol of the 1920s. Many people called her a "flapper." This meant she played free-spirited, modern women. Audiences loved her "rags-to-riches" stories. These were tales about people finding success.

When movies began using sound, Joan practiced hard. She studied singing and how to speak clearly. This helped her move from silent films to "talkies." She later won an Academy Award for Best Actress. This is a top prize for acting.
