Designers often use fake words to fill empty spaces. This special text is called Lorem ipsum. It acts as a placeholder. A placeholder holds a spot for real words later.

This helps people focus on the page layout. They can see where pictures and text will go. It also shows how different fonts look. Using nonsense text prevents people from getting distracted by reading.

This text works by being nonsensical. It is a corrupted version of real Latin. Someone took an old text and changed it. They added words and removed others. This makes the Latin improper and meaningless. The first two words come from a phrase meaning "pain itself."

Because it has no meaning, it does not pull the eye away. The reader only sees the design shapes. This is why it is so useful for graphic design.

A scholar named Richard McClintock found its true origin. He was a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College. He made his discovery before 1982. He was searching for a rare Latin word. He found that the text came from Cicero. Cicero was a Roman statesman and philosopher.

McClintock shared his findings in a 1994 letter. This letter was sent to a magazine called Before & After. His work proved the text had a real source.

The original words come from a book by Cicero. It is titled De finibus bonorum et malorum. The text uses parts from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. The source might be a 1914 Loeb Classical Library edition. On page 34, the text breaks off. It then continues on page 36. This break might have caused the mixed-up dummy text.

These specific parts create the Lorem ipsum we see today.

Lorem ipsum has moved through many different tools. In the 1960s, Letraset transfer sheets made it popular. Later, it entered the digital world in the mid-1980s. A program called PageMaker used it in templates. Now, many tools use it every day. Microsoft Word and Pages both use this text. Web tools like WordPress and Joomla! also use it.
