Lorem ipsum

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Lorem ipsum is a special type of dummy text. Designers call it placeholder text. It is used in graphic design, publishing, and web development. Its main job is to fill empty spaces on a page. This allows a designer to create a layout before the final words are ready. It also helps people see how different fonts look. Because the text is nonsense, it does not distract the viewer. People can focus on the shapes and colors of the design instead of reading the words.

The mechanism of Lorem ipsum relies on being nonsensical. It is a corrupted version of a real Latin text. Someone altered the original by adding, removing, or changing words. This process makes the Latin improper and meaningless. The first two words are a truncation of a phrase meaning "pain itself." By using this broken language, the text provides a visual texture. It mimics the look of real sentences without providing actual information. This ensures the reader's eye stays on the graphic elements.

There are different ways this text appears in modern tools. In the 1960s, it became popular through Letraset transfer sheets. These were physical sheets used in typesetting. Later, it moved into the digital world during the mid-1980s. The program PageMaker by Aldus was an early adopter. It included Lorem ipsum in its graphic and word-processing templates. Today, many digital platforms use it automatically. This includes word processors like Microsoft Word and Pages. It is also found in web tools like WordPress and Joomla!.

The history of this text was once a mystery. For a long time, some thought it had no meaning at all. However, a scholar named Richard McClintock discovered its true origin. He was a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College. He made his discovery sometime before 1982. He was searching for a rare Latin word during his research. He found a connection between the dummy text and the writings of Cicero. Cicero was a famous Roman statesman and philosopher.

McClintock shared his findings in a 1994 letter. He wrote to an editor at a magazine called Before & After. This letter was a response to a claim that the text was meaningless. The source of the text is the book De finibus bonorum et malorum. This work was written by Cicero. The specific fragments used come from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. These sections contain the pieces that were later scrambled into the dummy text.

Scientists believe a specific edition of the book created the text. They look at the 1914 Loeb Classical Library edition. This version of the text might have been mixed up during printing. On page 34, the text breaks off with the words "sed quia." It then continues on page 36 with "do eiusmod tempor." This gap between pages suggests a mistake happened with the galley type. This error likely resulted in the nonsensical version used by designers today.

Lorem ipsum connects ancient history to modern technology. It bridges the gap between 1st-century BC philosophy and 21st-century web design. What started as a classical text by Cicero is now a standard tool for coders. It is used in CSS libraries like Semantic UI. It remains a vital part of how we build digital spaces. By using a broken piece of history, designers can build a clearer future for visual communication.
