Local Hole

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Space has a very large, empty spot. We call this the KBC Void. It is named after three people who studied it. These experts are Ryan Keenan, Amy Barger, and Lennox Cowie. They studied this area in 2013.

The void is a giant, round shape. It is about 2 billion light-years wide. A light-year is how far light travels in one year. Even though it is a void, it is not empty. Our Milky Way galaxy lives inside it. We are near the center of this spot. The Laniakea Supercluster is also inside.

Some scientists argue about this hole. They do not all agree it exists. Some say it is too big to fit our models. Other scientists think it fits just fine. This hole might explain a big mystery. It involves the Hubble constant. This is a way to measure how fast space grows. Galaxies in the void feel a pull from the outside. This pull makes the space inside look like it grows faster. This might explain why different measurements of space do not match.
