A loader is a heavy machine used to move things.

These machines are very useful in construction. They can move soil, rock, sand, or even broken building pieces. A loader picks up these materials and puts them into other machines. This might be a dump truck or a railroad car.

Because they are so strong, they are important for many big jobs. They help build roads and clear away rubble.

Most loaders work using a special set of parts. A diesel engine provides the power for the whole machine. This engine runs the transmission to move the wheels or tracks. It also runs hydraulic parts like pumps and valves. These hydraulics move the two long arms, called booms, at the front.

These arms lift a wide bucket to scoop up loose dirt or gravel. The machine then carries the load to a new place. This way, it moves material without just pushing it across the ground.

People have been making different kinds of loaders for a long time. Frank G. Hough invented the first wheel loader in 1939. He called his machine the Payloader. Later, in 1953, a company called Mixermobile introduced articulated steering.

This design lets the machine bend in the middle to turn better. Another type of loader, the swingloader, was also made in 1953 by Ahlmann. These machines have booms that can swing to different sides.

There are many different sizes and names for these machines. The largest loader in the world is the LeTourneau L-2350.

It is made in Longview, Texas, and uses electric motors in its wheels. A small loader bucket might hold only 0.5 cubic meters of material. However, a huge loader bucket can hold up to 36 cubic meters.

Some loaders are even built with armor to protect the workers. The Israeli Combat Engineering Corps uses armored Caterpillar 966 loaders.

You might see loaders working in many places near you. Small loaders are great for clearing snow from sidewalks or parking lots.

They can also use forks to lift heavy pallets of goods. On farms, tractor loaders help move large bales of hay.

Some loaders even work in mines to move materials in tight spaces. Whether they are huge or small, loaders help get hard jobs done quickly.
