Lizzie Borden was an American woman who lived in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was born on July 19, 1860, to Sarah and Andrew Jackson Borden.

Her father was a very successful man. He made and sold furniture and caskets. He also owned many buildings and worked with banks. Even though he was wealthy, he was known for being very careful with money. He lived in a large house, but it did not have indoor plumbing.

Lizzie was a very active member of her community. She was a member of many religious groups. She taught Sunday school to children who had recently moved to the area. She also served as a secretary and treasurer for a church group. Lizzie was part of social movements like the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She spent much of her time helping others through the Ladies' Fruit and Flower Mission. Her life seemed very busy and involved with her church.

In August 1892, a very serious event changed everything. Lizzie's father and her stepmother, Abby, were killed in their home.

The attacks happened on August 4. A hatchet was used to kill both people. The investigation was very difficult for the police. They looked for clues in the house and the basement. They found two hatchets and an axe in the cellar. They also found a hatchet head with a broken handle. This tool was a main part of the investigation.

Lizzie became a suspect in the murders. The police thought her answers were strange and did not match. Some people said she was too calm during the investigation. They also noticed she tried to burn a dress that was covered in paint.

Even though she was found not guilty, the story stayed famous. Many people in Fall River treated her differently after the trial. She lived the rest of her life in that same city. Lizzie died of pneumonia in 1927 at the age of 66. Her death happened just nine days before her sister Emma died. Today, people still talk about this case in movies and books. It has become a big part of American popular culture.
