People have enjoyed these sweets for thousands of years. They may have started in China or the Middle East.

Making liquorice takes a few steps. Workers mix ingredients like sugar and plant extract in water. They heat the mix until it melts. Then they pour the liquid into molds. These molds are made by pressing holes into starch powder. This gives the candy its shape. Finally, they spray the sweets with beeswax to make them shiny.

There are many kinds of liquorice. In the United Kingdom, you can find liquorice allsorts. Some candy in Northern Europe is salty. This is because it uses ammonium chloride.

In North America, people often eat "red liquorice." These look like chewy ropes or tubes. However, they do not taste like the plant root. They use fruit flavors like strawberry or cherry instead.

Be careful not to eat too much. The plant root has a natural sweetener. Eating a lot of it every day can be bad for your heart.
