Deighton had a very clever way of showing people how to cook. He created something called "cookstrips." These were recipes that used cartoon-style drawings instead of just words. For example, he might draw three eggs instead of writing the words. This made his recipes very easy to follow. He wrote these for a magazine called The Observer between 1962 and 1966. He later put these drawings into a book called Len Deighton's Action Cook Book.

His life as a writer started with a very interesting childhood. He was born in London on February 18, 1929. When he was eleven years old, he saw a woman being arrested by the police. She was accused of being a spy during the Second World War. Deighton said this event was a big reason why he wanted to write spy stories. Before he was a famous author, he was a professional illustrator. He even designed book covers for other writers in 1957.

Deighton's first big novel was called The IPCRESS File. He wrote it in 1960 while he was staying in France. The book was a huge success and sold over 2.5 million copies in just three years. The story featured a spy who was very tough and worked for the government. Interestingly, this character did not even have a name! Deighton liked to keep the character unnamed to make the story feel different. He wrote several more books about this same character.

Throughout his life, Deighton worked in many different jobs. He served in the Royal Air Force and learned to be a photographer. He also worked as a flight attendant for an airline called BOAC. Later, he lived in many different countries like France, Ireland, and Portugal. He wrote about many things, including military history and the Battle of Britain. Even though he was very successful, he often stayed away from big parties and interviews. He remained a very busy and talented creator until the end of his life.
