John le Carré was a famous British-Irish author. He is best known for writing stories about spies. Many of his books became very successful movies or TV shows. People often call him one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He was known for writing about the hard choices people face. His stories were not just about action or gadgets. Instead, they explored how people think and feel in secret worlds.

Before he was a writer, he worked in the world of real secrets. He worked for two British groups called MI5 and MI6. In the 1950s and 1960s, he had many important jobs. He ran secret agents and interviewed people for information. He even tapped telephone lines and entered buildings to find secrets. These real experiences helped him write very realistic stories. He used his time in the intelligence services to learn how the world works.

Le Carré used a pen name to write his books. A pen name is a fake name used by an author. He used "John le Carré" because his job in the government forbade him from using his real name. His real name was David Cornwell. His third book, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold," was published in 1963. This book became a huge international success. Because of this success, he could leave his spy job to write books full-time.

He created many famous characters, like the spy George Smiley. Smiley was very different from action heroes like James Bond. He was an overweight man who wore glasses. He did not use big fights to win. Instead, he used his mind and clever thinking to solve problems. Le Carré also wrote about a real traitor named Kim Philby. This helped him create the famous "mole" stories. A mole is a person who secretly works for the other side.

His life and his books were often connected to each other. Some of his stories were based on his own family and his difficult childhood. For example, his book "A Perfect Spy" used ideas from his relationship with his father. He lived in many places, like England and Austria, during his life. He was born in Poole, England, in 1931 and died in 2020. His writing changed as the world changed, especially after the Cold War ended. He remains a very important name in the history of books.
