John le Carré was a famous writer. He was best known for books about spies.

Before he wrote, he worked for secret services. He worked for MI5 and MI6. These are British groups that collect secrets. He was a real spy. He ran agents and tapped phone lines. He even went into buildings to find information.

He used a pen name to write his books. A pen name is a fake name. He used "John le Carré" because his job forbade him from using his real name. His third book, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold," was a huge success. It became an international best-seller. This success let him leave his spy job to write full-time.

His stories were not like action movies. He did not use gadgets or big fights. Instead, his books focused on how people think and feel. He wrote about a smart spy named George Smiley. Smiley was an overweight man with glasses. He used his mind to solve problems. Many of these stories became famous films and TV shows. People call him one of the greatest writers of his time.
