Richard Flanagan is a famous Australian writer who tells powerful stories. He is known for writing both novels and non-fiction books. A novel is a made-up story, while non-fiction tells true facts. He has won many big awards for his work. He made history by winning two very important prizes in Britain. He won the Man Booker Prize for his novel, "The Narrow Road to the Deep North." Later, he won the Baillie Gifford Prize for his book, "Question 7." This makes him the first person ever to win both prizes.

Flanagan’s life has been full of interesting journeys. He was born in 1961 in Longford, Tasmania. He was the fifth of six children in his family. As a young boy, he had a hard time hearing. Doctors were able to fix this when he was six years old. He grew up in a remote mining town called Rosebery. Later, he studied history at the University of Tasmania and Oxford University. These studies helped him become a great writer.

Writing books is a skill that takes a lot of practice. Flanagan calls his early true books his "apprenticeship." This means he was learning how to be a professional. One early job was writing a book about a man named John Friedrich. He wrote this book in only six weeks to earn money. He also writes stories that feel like "soul histories." These stories look deeply into the lives of people and their families.

His books cover many different people and places. Some stories are about convicts in the year 1828. Other stories are about doctors in war or people facing climate change. He also writes about important real-world issues. He wrote about the Syrian refugee crisis in a book called "Notes on an Exodus." He even wrote about the salmon industry in Tasmania. His writing helps people notice things happening in the world.

Flanagan uses his fame to help others and protect nature. He is an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. He even gave $40,000 from a prize to help children learn to read. He also cares about the environment and the earth. When he won a prize in 2024, he did not take the money right away. He wanted the prize group to help the planet by using renewable energy. He lives in Hobart, Tasmania, with his wife and three daughters.
