She spent over 40 years writing books for many people to enjoy. Her work was very important in Australian literature. She was a leading woman writer during the 1960s and 1970s. This was a time when most famous writers were men. She was the only woman of her generation to find early success. She also published her books very steadily throughout those decades.

Astley had a very busy way of working on her stories. She believed that writing could be done almost anywhere. She once wrote a whole short story while on a plane. She also took notes at lunch tables or in small pubs. Sometimes she wrote in tiny rooms on a train. She even wrote in a bedroom on Palm Island. She told her students that writing one page every day helps. This simple habit can add up to a whole book in a year.

Her life began in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1925. She went to All Hallows' School and studied at the University of Queensland. After she married Jack Gregson in 1948, she moved to Sydney. There, she worked as a teacher in many different high schools. She later tutored at Macquarie University from 1968 until 1980. Eventually, she moved to North Queensland to write full-time. She lived in places like Kuranda, Nowra, and finally Byron Bay.

Astley won many great prizes for her wonderful books. She won the Miles Franklin Award four times for her novels. These awards were for books like The Well-Dressed Explorer and Drylands. In 1989, she received the Patrick White Award for her service to books. She was also given an honorary doctorate by her university. In 1980 and 1992, she was named a Member and Officer of the Order of Australia. These are very special honors in her home country.

Many people still talk about her unique way of writing. She used very beautiful and detailed language in her stories. Some critics found her style difficult, but many others loved it. They liked her humor and her views on how people act. Her stories often looked at small towns and the Queensland landscape. She even wrote about how people treat each other fairly. Today, a special plaque honors her at the Sydney Writers Walk.
