She wrote novels and short stories for over 40 years. She won the Miles Franklin Award four times. This is a major prize for books in Australia. No other writer won this award more often than she did.

Astley also worked as a teacher. She taught at many levels of school. She taught primary, secondary, and university students. She often told her students to write one page every day. She said this helps you finish a book in a year.

She loved to travel and find new stories. She wrote in many places. She wrote on planes and in small pubs. She also wrote on boats and at train stations. Much of her work was set in Queensland. She used the people and places she saw there for her stories.

Astley was a very successful woman writer. During the 1960s, most famous writers were men. She was the only woman of her time to find such early success. People still honor her today. There is even a special lecture named after her in Byron Bay.
