Lead(II) nitrate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Lead(II) nitrate is a special chemical substance. It usually looks like white powder or clear crystals. Most other salts made from lead do not mix well with water. However, this one is soluble. This means it can dissolve into water quite easily.

It is also an oxidizer. An oxidizer is a substance that helps other things burn. Because of this, it has been used in pyrotechnics, which are colorful fireworks. Scientists must be very careful with it. It is toxic to living things. It can cause cancer in humans. People can get sick if they touch it, breathe it in, or swallow it.

There are a few ways to make this compound. One way is to react lead(II) oxide with strong nitric acid. This is a chemical reaction that creates the substance. Another way involves using metallic lead. Scientists can dissolve metallic lead in dilute nitric acid. They then evaporate the liquid to find the crystals.

This process is chemically straightforward. It is a simple way to turn raw materials into a new substance. In some places, it is even made from waste found in lead refineries. This waste contains lead and bismuth.

People have known about this substance for a very long time. During the Middle Ages, it was called "plumbum dulce." This is a Latin name that means "sweet lead." An alchemist named Andreas Libavius first described it in 1597. He gave it that name because of how it tasted. For many centuries, people only made it on a small scale. They used it to make colored pigments for paints. These paints were used to dye textiles like calico.

Large commercial production did not start until 1835. By 1835, it was used widely to make other lead compounds.

This chemical has many different jobs in the world. In the past, it helped make bright colors like chrome yellow. These colors were used in many types of paint. Today, we use different paints that are safer. Now, lead(II) nitrate helps make nylon and polyesters. It is also used as a coating for special heat-sensitive paper. Since the year 2000, it has been used in gold cyanidation. This is a way to help get gold out of rocks. Only a tiny amount is needed for this job.

Understanding the tiny structure of this compound is very interesting. Scientists use something called neutron diffraction to see its shape. This helps them map where the atoms sit. The lead atoms form a cubic system. This means they sit in a shape like a cube. Every lead atom is bonded to twelve oxygen atoms. These bonds are all the same length.

Scientists also study how it reacts with other things in a lab. They look at how it forms complex shapes with nitrogen and oxygen. This research helps us understand how the atoms work together.
