Layer cake

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A layer cake is a special treat made of stacked sheets. People call them sandwich cakes in the UK. These cakes use filling to hold the layers together. You might find jam or frosting inside. Some bakers cover the whole cake in icing. Other bakers leave the sides plain to show the layers. This lets you see the colors and fillings inside.

Making these cakes can happen in a few different ways. Most modern cakes use thick layers of sponge or butter cake. Bakers often bake a thick cake and then split it horizontally. This creates two or more flat sheets to stack. Some special cakes use a different method. For a Dobos torte, the baker bakes many thin layers separately. These layers are only about a half-inch thick. They stack these thin pieces with cream or jam.

People have been writing about these cakes for a long time. Modern cake descriptions first appeared in English during the mid-19th century. One early recipe was in Maria Parloa's Appledore Cook Book. That book was published in Boston in 1872. Another early recipe appeared in London later on. It was in Cassell's New Universal Cookery Book in 1894. Even older cakes exist from much earlier times. The Frankfurter Kranz was invented in 1735. This cake uses sponge cake with jam and buttercream.

There are many famous types of layer cakes to explore. A Black Forest cake uses chocolate, cream, and cherries. German chocolate cake is a popular American version. You might also try a carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Some cakes have very many layers, like the Medovik honey cake. Others come from specific places, like the Sarawak layer cake from Malaysia. A nine-inch round cake is a common size. This size can serve about 16 people. At a wedding, the slices are much smaller. A single cake might serve 32 people there.

Layer cakes are much larger than small treats like cupcakes. They are meant for sharing with many people at once. You can find them in many different cultures around the world. In France, people call a cake a gâteau. In the UK, gâteau can also mean a layer cake. Some desserts, like the Gâteau Basque, are made with pastry. Whether it is a chocolate Blackout cake or a colorful Funfetti cake, these treats bring people together. They are a wonderful part of many celebrations.
