These sheets stack on top of each other. People use filling to hold them together. This filling can be jam or frosting. Some cakes are covered in icing. Other cakes leave the sides plain. This lets you see the many layers.

Some cakes use many thin layers. The Dobos torte is one such cake. It has many thin layers stacked high. Other cakes use thicker layers. Bakers often split thick cakes in half. There are many kinds of layer cakes. A Black Forest cake uses chocolate, cream, and cherries. A carrot cake uses cream cheese icing. Some cakes are very large. A nine-inch round cake can feed many people. It might feed 16 people. At a wedding, the pieces are small. One cake can serve 32 people. Many people love to share these treats.
