Most cakes have many layers and thick frosting. People often write "Happy Birthday" on them. They may also add the person's name.

Many people use candles to celebrate. In some places, the number of candles shows how old you are. You might even add one extra candle for good luck. Guests often sing a song while the candles glow. Then, the birthday person blows them out. Some people make a secret wish. They believe the wish comes true if they blow all candles out in one breath.

This tradition has a long history. In old Germany, children had a party called Kinderfest.

Long ago, cakes were only for very rich people. Later, more people could buy them. Different cultures have their own treats. In China, people eat buns shaped like peaches. In Russia, children might get a fruit pie. In Egypt, a party might have two different cakes!
