Law of Spain

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Spain has a set of rules called laws. These laws cover the whole country. They also cover Spanish ships and offices in other lands.

The most important rule is the Constitution of 1978. It protects the rights of all people. It also tells the government how to work. All other laws must follow the Constitution. A group called the Constitutional Court checks the laws. If a law breaks the Constitution, the Court can stop it.

Spain splits its work into different parts. This is called the separation of functions. People age 18 or older can vote for leaders. These leaders meet in a group called the Cortes Generales. This group has two parts. One part is the Congress of Deputies. The other part is the Senate. These leaders make new laws. They also choose the Prime Minister. Judges and courts handle the judicial power. They make sure people follow the law. There are also many types of laws. Some laws are for business. Some laws are for families. Other laws are for taxes and money.
