Laws are rules that help a state rule its land. We call the places where laws start "sources of law."

Some laws are written by leaders. This is called legislation. A group called a legislature makes these rules. They can make new laws or change old ones. In the UK, the Parliament makes these laws. In many places, a constitution is the main source of law.

Other laws come from judges. This is called case law or precedent. Judges look at old cases to help them decide new ones. This helps the law change over time. In some places, this is called common law.

Some rules come from old traditions. These are called customs. If people follow a way for a very long time, it can become a law. Laws can also come from religion. These come from sacred texts or religious rules.

Finally, countries can make rules together. These are international laws. They use treaties to help different lands work together.
