His life changed forever when he was eleven years old. Spanish soldiers captured him and made him a servant. He served a Spanish leader named Pedro de Valdivia. The Spaniards gave him the name Felipe Lautaro. He lived as a prisoner for three years. This time was very hard and unfair for him. He saw many cruel things happen to his people. These events made him feel a deep hatred for the Spaniards.

While he was a servant, Lautaro learned many secrets. He worked in the stables and cared for horses. Many Mapuche people thought horses were magical creatures. Lautaro saw they were just animals. He learned how to ride them very well. He also worked with a captain named Marcos Veas. Veas taught him how to use different weapons. Lautaro watched how the Spanish army moved and fought. He used this knowledge to plan for the future. He escaped for good in 1552 to return to his people.

When he returned, the Mapuche chose him to be a toqui. A toqui is a powerful military leader. Lautaro was a very smart leader. He taught his warriors how to fight against horses. He also organized his army into large, organized groups. This was a new way for the Mapuche to fight. In 1553, he led 6,000 warriors to Fort Tucapel. This was a very important victory for him. During this battle, the Spanish leader Pedro de Valdivia was killed.

Lautaro fought many more battles after that. In 1554, he led 8,000 men against Francisco de Villagra. He used a smart plan with four different groups of soldiers. He also attacked the city of Concepción. This was a difficult time because of sickness and hunger. In 1556, Lautaro marched north toward Santiago. His group grew smaller, but he kept going. He fought at the Mataquito River in 1557. He defended a camp at Peteroa against Spanish forces. He was a very brave and determined leader.

His life ended during a surprise attack in 1557. The Spanish caught him in an ambush near the hills of Caune. This happened on April 29, 1557. Even though he died, his name lived on. Many people in Chile still honor him today. He is seen as a hero who fought for freedom. A famous poet named Alonso de Ercilla wrote about him. The poet Pablo Neruda also wrote a poem about his life. Today, you can even find him in the game Civilization VI.
