He is known as one of the fathers of the nation. This means he helped build Chile as a free country. He was born in Santiago on October 15, 1785. His parents were Ignacio de la Carrera and Francisca de Paula Verdugo. He grew up in a family that was very well known. Even as a young boy, he began his training for the military.

Carrera learned a lot about fighting and leading in Europe. He went to Spain to study and join the army. In 1808, he joined the Spanish military to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. He was a brave soldier and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. He even led a special group of soldiers called the Húsares de Galicia. During his time in Europe, he fought in about 20 different battles. He was even wounded once during a fight at Ocana.

When he returned to Chile, he became a powerful ruler. He led a coup d'état on November 15, 1811. This made him the sole leader of the country for a time. Carrera wanted Chile to be independent from Spain. He worked hard to create things that made Chile feel like a real nation. He helped make the first Chilean flag and the first coat of arms. He also brought the first printing press to Chile to start newspapers.

His time as a leader was full of many hard jobs. He helped start the first state school called the Instituto Nacional. He also worked to end slavery in the country. However, he had many disagreements with other leaders like Bernardo O'Higgins. These fights led to many wars and much sadness. One big fight was the Disaster of Rancagua in 1814. During this time, the Spanish army took control of much of Chile again.

After he lost power, Carrera had to live in other places. He traveled to the United States and then to Montevideo. He even tried to lead an army back to Chile from Argentina. He worked with different groups, including the Ranquel tribe, to reach his goals. Sadly, he was caught by his enemies in the city of Mendoza. He was executed on September 4, 1821. Today, many people in Chile still honor his memory and his work.
