Miranda studied many different subjects to prepare for his future. He started his studies at the University of Caracas in 1762. He learned Latin, grammar, and religion during those early years. Between 1764 and 1766, he studied history, geography, and math. He also read the works of famous writers like Cicero. In June 1767, he earned his degree in the Humanities. He later moved to Madrid in 1771 to study more. He wanted to learn modern languages to travel across Europe. He also studied political science to serve the Spanish Crown.

His military career began in Spain and North Africa. In 1774, he saw his first combat in Morocco. He helped defend a place called Melilla during a siege. Later, he joined the American Revolutionary War in 1780. He traveled to Cuba and fought at the Siege of Pensacola. During this time, he was given the title of lieutenant colonel.

He also helped the French during the Battle of the Chesapeake. He worked to find money and supplies for the fight. This experience showed him how different parts of the world were connected.

Miranda faced many hard times and difficult choices. In 1781, he was accused of being a spy and a smuggler. This happened after he worked in Jamaica to help prisoners. He was even arrested by Spanish officials for a short time. These events made him think about independence for South America. In 1791, he joined the French Revolution as a general. He fought in the Battle of Valmy and the Flanders campaign.

Sadly, the republic fell apart in 1812. Other leaders, like Simón Bolívar, were angry with his decisions. They allowed the Spanish to arrest him. Miranda died in a prison in Cádiz four years later.
