The city is unique because it is one of the youngest in Italy. It was founded in 1932 during the fascist administration. Before the city existed, the surrounding land was a swamp. This area had been a swamp since antiquity. To make the land usable, the water had to be drained. This massive project transformed the wet landscape into dry ground for building. The city was originally named Littoria. This name was derived from the fascio littorio.

The development of Littoria happened with incredible speed. Benito Mussolini founded the city on 30 June 1932. The city was officially inaugurated on 18 December 1932. It took only 171 days to build up the area for its inauguration.

During this time, many settlers moved to the new location. Most of these people came from the Friuli and Veneto regions. They formed a specific group known as the Venetian-Pontine community. Today, this community survives mostly in some of the peripheral boroughs.

Architecture and culture shaped the early identity of the city. Famous architects and artists designed the buildings and monuments. These professionals included Marcello Piacentini, Angiolo Mazzoni, and Duilio Cambellotti. They primarily used a style known as rationalist architecture. In 1934, the settlement became a provincial capital. After World War II ended, the city was renamed Latina in 1946. As more people arrived from the Lazio region, the local language changed. The original Venetian-like dialect was gradually replaced by a form of Romanesco dialect.

The economy of Latina is diverse and supports many industries. The city has a strong service sector and several industrial branches. Specifically, there are pharmaceutical and chemical industries located there. Agriculture is also a major part of the local economy. The region produces vegetables, flowers, sugar, and fruit. It is also known for cheese and other dairy derivatives. The city once had a nuclear power plant. That plant has been shut down and is currently undergoing decommissioning.

Geography and climate define the daily experience of living in Latina. The city has a Mediterranean climate, which is classified as Csa under the Köppen system. This type of weather is common across southern Italy. The municipality shares borders with several other places. These include Aprilia, Cisterna di Latina, Nettuno, Pontinia, Sabaudia, Sermoneta, and Sezze. While there is no airport in the city, travel is possible via Rome Fiumicino Airport. This airport is located to the northwest of Latina.

Latina is also recognized through its symbols and international ties. The city coat of arms features a blue shield. In the center is a stylized drawing of the City Hall Clock Tower. The tower stands on a field of green. It is flanked by two stalks of wheat tied with a red ribbon. The motto on the shield is "LATINA OLIM PALUS," which is Latin for "Latina, once a swamp." The city also maintains international relations through twin towns. Latina is twinned with Palos de la Frontera in Spain, Farroupilha in Brazil, and Birkenhead in England.
