Frecciarossa

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Frecciarossa is a premier high-speed train service in Italy. Its name translates to "red arrow" in English. It is operated by Trenitalia, the Italian national train operator. The Frecciarossa belongs to a larger category of trains called Le Frecce. This service is designed to move passengers across the country at very high speeds. It serves as the top-tier brand for Trenitalia. Other brands like Frecciargento and Frecciabianca provide slower services. The Frecciarossa competes directly with italo, which is operated by Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori.

These trains operate using two different types of rail infrastructure. Many Frecciarossa routes run on dedicated high-speed railway lines. These lines are built specifically to support rapid travel. However, some routes also use conventional railway lines. These older lines have lower speed limits. When a train must use conventional tracks, its maximum speed is limited to 250 km/h. On dedicated high-speed lines, the trains can reach much higher velocities. This dual capability allows the network to reach many different destinations.

There are four distinct types of rolling stock used for these services. The ETR 500 is a non-tilting train. It consists of eleven passenger coaches. One of these coaches provides cafe and restaurant services. It has 574 seats and is moved by two E.404 locomotives. The ETR 600 is a tilting train. Tilting technology allows the train to lean into curves. This model has seven passenger coaches and 432 seats. It can reach speeds of 250 km/h.

The third type is the ETR 700. This is a non-tilting train with eight passenger coaches. It includes a cafe or restaurant service and has 497 seats. Like the ETR 600, it reaches speeds of 250 km/h. Finally, there is the ETR 1000. This is a non-tilting electro-train. It features eight passenger coaches and 457 seats. The ETR 1000 is capable of reaching speeds up to 400 km/h. Each model serves different needs for speed and passenger capacity.

The history of the service includes a significant rebranding. Before 2008, the service was known as Eurostar Italia. The name Frecciarossa was introduced to establish its new identity. Since then, the network has grown to connect many major Italian cities. Some routes are very long and cross through many regions. For example, one route connects Turin, Milan, Reggio Emilia AV, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, and Salerno. Another route travels from Milan to Reggio Emilia AV, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Salerno, Potenza, Ferrandina, Metaponto, Taranto, and Brindisi.

The network even extends beyond the borders of Italy. The Frecciarossa brand includes a service connecting Milan to Paris. This international route travels through several different locations. It can go via Turin, Bardonecchia, Modane, Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux, and Lyon-Part-Dieu. Another version of the Paris route travels through Lyon-Perrache and Lyon-Part-Dieu. These connections show how high-speed rail integrates different European regions. The service makes long-distance travel much faster for international passengers.

While these trains are highly efficient, they have been involved in serious incidents. On February 6, 2020, a train derailed at Ospedaletto Lodigiano. This event resulted in two deaths and 27 injuries. On December 10, 2023, a collision occurred at Faenza involving another passenger train. This incident injured 17 people. Additionally, on January 18, 2026, an ETR 1000 operated by Iryo derailed in Adamuz. This train collided with an Alvia Class 120 train. This specific accident caused 46 deaths across both trains. These events highlight the complexities of high-speed rail safety.
