Eurostar is an international high-speed rail service operating in Western Europe. It provides rapid connections between the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The service relies on the Channel Tunnel to link the UK with mainland Europe. This service is managed by the Eurostar Group. This group was created through a merger of Eurostar and Thalys. Eurostar is a vital part of the European transport network. It offers a fast alternative to air travel for many passengers.

The mechanism of the service depends on specialized high-speed lines. These tracks allow trains to maintain very high velocities safely.

In the United Kingdom, trains use High Speed 1 to reach London. In France, they utilize the LGV Nord to travel toward Paris and Lille. The Belgian network includes several high-speed lines, such as HSL 1 and HSL 2. These lines connect Brussels to the French border and beyond. By using these dedicated tracks, the trains avoid slower, local rail traffic. This specialized infrastructure is what makes the high-speed service possible.

Eurostar operates through several distinct networks and routes. The historic network departs from London St Pancras International. From there, it serves Paris-Nord, Lille-Europe, Brussels-South, and Amsterdam-Central.

Following the merger, the service also includes routes historically operated by Thalys. These routes connect Paris-Nord to cities like Antwerp, Cologne, and Dortmund.

Other services depart from Amsterdam-Central and Brussels-South. These reach destinations like Marseille and Avignon in southern France. This interconnected system allows for complex journeys across many different borders.

The history of the Channel Tunnel began much earlier than the trains themselves. Proposals for a tunnel were made as early as 1802. However, national security concerns delayed the project for many years. The modern era began with the 1986 Treaty of Canterbury between France and the UK.

Tunnelling work officially started in 1988. In 1989, an order was placed for 30 train sets based on French TGV technology. The tunnel officially opened on 6 May 1994. Queen Elizabeth II and President François Mitterrand performed the opening ceremony. Shortly after, Eurostar services began running from London Waterloo to Paris and Brussels.

Eurostar has achieved significant scale and recognition over the decades. Since 1994, the service has transported more than 400 million passengers. In 2025, the service reached a record of 20 million passengers.

The operator has also received many prestigious honors. It won the World's Leading Passenger Rail Operator award for 15 consecutive occasions. The company has also been recognized for its environmental and sustainability practices. These awards came from various organizations, including the Sunday Times and PETA.

Recent years have brought both challenges and major changes to the company. During the COVID-19 pandemic, international travel restrictions caused a massive drop in ridership. By January 2021, ridership fell to less than 1% of pre-pandemic levels.

This period created a significant financial crisis for the operator. Despite this, Eurostar returned to profitability by the 2022/23 period. Another major milestone was the merger with Thalys. This merger was confirmed in September 2020. In October 2023, the Eurostar brand officially replaced the Thalys brand across the network.

Looking forward, Eurostar is focused on expansion and modernization. The company is planning to purchase 50 new trains.

These new trains may allow for new routes by the early 2030s. Potential new destinations include Frankfurt and Geneva. The service also aims to double its passenger numbers between 2022 and 2030. By connecting more cities, Eurostar continues to integrate the rail systems of Western Europe. This expansion strengthens the links between the UK and the rest of the continent.
