It was created by the Belgian company Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, also known as CIWL. The service operated for many decades, from 1883 until 2009. It traveled across the vast landscape of continental Europe. The train connected the western and eastern parts of the continent. Its main terminal stations were in Paris and Istanbul.

While it was a standard international railway service, the name became a symbol of luxury and intrigue. It remains one of the most famous names in the history of rail travel.

The train functioned through a specific arrangement of specialized railway cars.

A typical composition included baggage cars to hold passenger belongings. The sleeping coaches provided various capacities for rest. Some coaches featured 16 beds, while others held 14 or 13 beds.

Other dishes included chicken ‘à la chasseur’, fillet of beef, and chocolate pudding. This combination of sleeping and dining cars allowed for comfortable, long-distance travel.

Different routes and service types emerged as the network grew.

The original service began in 1883, running from Paris to Vienna via Munich. Later, the route was extended to Giurgiu, Romania. From there, passengers used ferries to cross the Danube and the Bosphorus to reach Constantinople.

In 1919, the Simplon Orient Express was introduced. This new route used the Simplon Tunnel and passed through Milan, Venice, and Trieste. This southern route became the most important path between Paris and Istanbul. By the 1930s, three parallel services existed: the Orient Express, the Simplon Orient Express, and the Arlberg Orient Express.

The Arlberg route ran via Zürich and Innsbruck to Budapest, with cars going to Bucharest and Athens.

The history of the service was shaped by many influential people and global events.

Georges Nagelmackers, the son of a Belgian banker, founded the CIWL. In 1882, he hosted a test trip on his Train Eclair de luxe. This trip left Paris on 10 October 1882 and arrived in Vienna the next day. The official service launched on 5 June 1883. However, the World Wars caused major interruptions. The First World War suspended services in 1914. The Second World War interrupted them again in 1939. During the war, Yugoslav Partisans sometimes sabotaged the tracks used by German Mitropa services. These conflicts changed the geopolitical landscape of Europe and the train's operations.

The decline of the original service was driven by changing technology and economics.

After World War II, the Orient Express struggled to stay prominent. The rise of air travel provided faster ways to move between cities. The service also faced challenges from the Iron Curtain. Communist nations often replaced the specialized CIWL cars with their own national carriages. The route was gradually cut back over several decades. It stopped serving Istanbul in 1977. It was reduced to a service for Bucharest, then Budapest, and eventually Vienna. The last official Orient Express departed Paris in 2007. The service finally ceased entirely on 14 December 2009. It became a victim of high-speed trains and low-cost airlines.

Today, the legacy of the Orient Express lives on through private luxury ventures.

In 1982, businessman James Sherwood started the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. This private company uses restored carriages from the 1920s and 1930s. These journeys are aimed at leisure travelers seeking nostalgia. Tickets for these trips can cost as much as US$3,262 per person. The company operates several routes, including the classic path from Paris to Istanbul via Vienna and Budapest.

Other modern plans include a new Orient Express from Accor, which is expected to launch in late 2026. These ventures keep the spirit of the historic journey alive for modern travelers.

The Orient Express connects the history of transportation to broader shifts in global society. It shows how railways once unified distant parts of a continent. The transition from steam and luxury coaches to high-speed rail and airplanes marks a major change in how humans move. The service also reflects the political history of Europe, from the era of empires to the Cold War. Even as the original timetables disappeared, the name remains a powerful connection to a golden age of travel. It links the past's slow, elegant movement with the modern world's need for speed.
