The Société nationale des chemins de fer français, or SNCF, is the state-owned railway operator for France. It manages nearly all rail transport within France and the principality of Monaco.

The organization is vital for moving both people and goods across the country. It operates through several specialized branches to ensure the network functions correctly. SNCF Voyageurs handles passenger services, while Rail Logistics Europe manages freight. A third part, called SNCF Réseau, is responsible for managing the actual railway infrastructure. This massive system keeps millions of travelers moving every single day.

To understand how the SNCF works, one must look at its vast physical network. In 2017, the network owned by SNCF Réseau included 28,710 kilometers of lines. Of these lines, 58% were electrified to provide power to the trains. The network also includes 2,640 kilometers of high-speed lines. Every day, the company operates more than 14,000 commercial trains. These trains transport over 5 million passengers and more than 250,000 tonnes of goods. This constant movement requires a complex system of maintenance and control.

The company maintains 3,900 locomotives and 500 high-speed trains to meet this demand.

A major part of the SNCF's identity is the TGV, or Train à Grande Vitesse. This term means "high-speed train" in French.

The TGV program began in the 1970s to create the world's fastest railway network. This goal was achieved in 1981 with the LGV Sud-Est, the first high-speed line. This line connected Paris to Lyon and changed how people traveled. The technology behind the TGV is so advanced that it has set several world speed records. In 2007, a special version called the V150 reached a record speed of 574.8 km/h.

This V150 model used larger wheels and a stronger engine to cover more ground per rotation.

The history of the SNCF began with the nationalization of several private companies. On January 1, 1938, the French government merged many different rail companies into one. These included companies like Nord, Est, and the PLM, which stood for Paris, Lyon, and the Mediterranean.

Initially, the French state owned 51% of the SNCF. The remaining 49% was held by shareholders of various financial companies. This private ownership lasted for 45 years until 1983. Since then, the SNCF has been wholly owned by the French state. The company's headquarters have been located in Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris, since July 2013.

The organization faced very difficult challenges during World War II. Between 1940 and 1944, German occupying forces requisitioned the railway to transport troops and weapons. During this time, invading troops destroyed nearly 350 bridges and tunnels. Many railway workers joined the French Resistance to fight against these orders. This group was known as the Résistance-Fer movement. Sadly, nearly 1,700 workers were killed or deported for their resistance. The railway was also used by occupying forces to transport approximately 77,000 Jewish people to extermination camps. This period remains a subject of historical study and legal discussion. In 2014, the SNCF agreed to pay up to $60 million in compensation to Holocaust survivors in the United States.

Today, the SNCF Group is a massive global entity with a presence in 120 countries. In 2020, the group reported sales of €30 billion. It employs more than 275,000 people around the world. The company provides expert services including design, construction, and maintenance. For example, SNCF helped design the Al Boraq bullet train in Morocco. In South Korea, they assisted with the electrification of tracks and trained 400 managers and engineers. They have also provided assistance to Israel Railways regarding safety regulations.

Their expertise helps nations build and operate modern high-speed systems.

The work of the SNCF connects to many different fields of engineering and logistics. Maintaining the tracks requires managing 26,500 points and crossings and 2,300 signal boxes. They also look after 80,000 track circuits and over 1 million relays. This level of technical detail ensures that the high-speed lines remain safe. In fact, the TGV system has a remarkable safety record. In nearly 30 years of operation, the TGV system experienced only one fatal accident. That accident occurred during testing and not during regular passenger service. This dedication to safety and technology makes the SNCF a leader in global transportation.
