The company does many important jobs to keep people moving. It runs services for passengers and carries heavy freight goods. It also manages the tracks and signals through a part called SNCF Réseau. This work helps keep the whole rail system running smoothly every day.

One of the most famous parts of the SNCF is the TGV. This name stands for Train à Grande Vitesse, which means high-speed train.

The company began this program in the 1970s to build a very fast network. The first high-speed line, called the LGV Sud-Est, opened in 1981. It ran from Paris to Lyon. One special TGV called the V150 even set a world speed record. On April 3, 2007, it reached a speed of 574.8 km/h.

The SNCF is a massive global business today. It has more than 275,000 employees working in 120 different countries.
