The city serves as a major political center for the region. It houses the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. It also holds half of the ministries and boards of the Canarian government. The Canarian Ministry of Presidency is also located here.

The city's climate is classified as a desert climate.

This classification is based on the Koppen-Geiger system. A local feature called the Canary Current helps keep temperatures cool. This results in warm weather throughout the entire year. The average annual temperature is 21°C during the day and 17°C at night. The sun shines for more than 2,800 hours every year.

Juan Rejón founded the city under the name "Real de Las Palmas." He settled with 30 soldiers at the mouth of the Guiniguada ravine. This location is now the Vegueta district. A five-year war followed between the soldiers and the local people. The conflict ended in 1483 when Pedro de Vera incorporated the island into the Crown of Castile. In 1485, the diocese was moved to Real de Las Palmas. The city grew in importance as it became the residence for the Captains General. It even served as the de facto capital during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Famous explorers and leaders have visited or influenced the city.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus anchored in the port. He needed to repair the rudder of his ship, the Pinta. He also stopped there while returning from his first trip to the Americas. A museum in the Vegueta district is named in his honor. Later, the city faced attacks from foreign powers. In 1595, Francis Drake attempted to plunder the town. In 1599, a Dutch raid led by Pieter van der Does caused some destruction. However, the raiders were eventually repelled by the defenders.

The coastline features several distinct types of beaches.

Playa de Las Canteras is the largest beach in the city. It is 3,100 meters long and sits on the isthmus of Guanarteme. A natural barrier of coral sandstone called "the bar" protects it from waves. This beach has received ISO 14001 certification for environmental management.

Another area is Playa de Las Alcaravaneras, which features fine golden sand. Playa de la Laja is about 1,200 meters long with fine gray sand. This beach is popular for surfing due to its intense waves. Finally, Playa del Confital is a narrower beach with volcanic sand.

It is famous among professional surfers for its right-hand waves.

Modern development was driven by the city's seaport.

The port saw a massive increase in activity during the Suez Crisis. This occurred between 1967 and 1975 when the Suez Canal was closed. During this time, many foreign workers migrated to the city for work. In 1927, the Province of Canary Islands was split into two. Las Palmas became the capital of its own province. This province includes the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.

Today, the city is organized into five administrative districts.

The districts are Vegueta, Cono Sur y Tafira; Centro; La Isleta-Puerto-Canteras; Ciudad Alta; and Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo. Each district has a different population size. Ciudad Alta is the largest with 101,684 residents. Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo is the smallest with 39,191 residents. These divisions help manage the complex urban environment. The city remains a vital hub for tourism, government, and maritime trade in the Atlantic Ocean.
