Farmers lived along the prehistoric IJ and Amstel rivers. However, the area was too wet for permanent towns for a long time. A massive event called the All Saint's Flood occurred in 1170. This flood turned the shallow IJ river into a wide estuary. This change allowed the Amstel River to drain water more effectively.

Drier river banks finally made permanent habitation possible. People eventually built a dam at the Amstel mouth to control the flow. This dam gave the settlement its name, "at the dam in the Amstel."

Amsterdam grew through specific economic stages. In the 14th century, it flourished by trading with the Hanseatic League. By the 15th century, it established direct trade routes to the Baltic Sea. This allowed the city to trade grain and timber without middlemen. A major driver of wealth was the herring fishery.

New inventions like the haringbuis ship made long voyages possible. These ships allowed fishermen to follow herring shoals far from the coast. This industry required massive cooperation between merchants, sailors, and bookkeepers. This complex system laid the foundations for the Dutch Golden Age.

The 17th century was known as the Dutch Golden Age.

It is considered the oldest "modern" securities market in the world. This era also saw the rise of famous artists like Rembrandt. The city's architecture, including narrow canal houses with gabled façades, remains a legacy of this time.

Religious and intellectual freedom helped the city expand. During the Eighty Years' War, the Dutch rebelled against Spanish rule. This conflict led to the Dutch Republic, which practiced relative religious tolerance.
