It is the largest city in the country by land area, covering 319.4 square kilometers. It is also the second-largest city by population. The city sits in the province of South Holland. It is part of the North Sea mouth of the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta. This location makes it a vital hub for global trade. Rotterdam is widely known as Europe's largest seaport. Because of its massive distribution systems, people call it the "Gateway to Europe" or the "Gateway to the World."

The geography of Rotterdam is shaped by its relationship with water. The city is divided into northern and southern sections by the Nieuwe Maas river. Several structures connect these two sides. These include the Erasmusbrug bridge and the Maastunnel.

Much of the city is built behind dikes to manage the water. In fact, large parts of Rotterdam sit below sea level. The Prins Alexander Polder is one such area in the northeast. The lowest point in the Netherlands is located just east of the city.

The city reaches the North Sea through a large stretch of harbor land.

Rotterdam's economic strength comes from its complex waterway network. The Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers provide access to Western Europe. These rivers connect the port to highly industrialized areas like the Ruhr. The city uses the New Meuse inland shipping channel to connect to the Rhine. This allows goods to move easily by ship, rail, and road. The port has grown steadily over many centuries. In the 1800s, the completion of the Nieuwe Waterweg spurred massive growth.

This development allowed the city and harbor to expand onto the south bank of the river.

The history of the settlement began long before it was a large city. Evidence shows a settlement existed near the Rotte stream as early as 950. The name Rotte comes from words meaning "muddy water."

In the 1260s, a dam was built on the Rotte. This helped shape the early town. On July 7, 1340, William IV, the Count of Holland, granted Rotterdam city rights. By 1350, the completion of the Rotterdamse Schie canal helped the city grow. It became a center for moving goods between the Netherlands, England, and Germany.

Rotterdam experienced significant changes during the 20th century. During World War I, the city became a major center for espionage. Because the Netherlands remained neutral, spies from many nations operated there. During World War II, the city faced extreme hardship. In May 1940, the German Luftwaffe bombed the city center.

This bombing almost completely destroyed the heart of Rotterdam. Approximately 80,000 civilians lost their homes, and 900 people were killed. The city also suffered during the deportation of its Jewish population. Many people were sent to camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau. The motto "Stronger through effort" was later given to the city to honor this resilience.

Modern Rotterdam is famous for its unique and varied architecture. Since the center was rebuilt after the war, it has a very modern feel. Architects like Rem Koolhaas and Piet Blom have designed parts of the skyline.

You can see daring styles of apartments and office buildings. The Kop van Zuid is a major business center on the south bank. Other notable structures include the Euromast tower and the Cube Houses.

It is the 10th-largest metropolitan area in the European Union. The city's climate is temperate and oceanic. It is slightly milder than areas further inland because of the coast.
